Death metal – and it’s many sub genres and off shoots – rarely shy away from the controversial. In fact, the unflinching candour and rawness of the lyrical content can leave a listener wincing if they dare to pick up and read the liner notes of an album. At first glance, Venom Prison, don’t necessarily appear to deviate from what has gone before – but to assume they’re relying on tried and tested death metal tropes would be wide of the mark.

The artwork for Animus was created by German based legendary artist, Eliran Kantor (Testament, Sigh) who worked closely with Larissa to capture some of the themes of the album. It may not look out of place amongst the Obituary and Cannibal Corpse cover art out there, but look a little closer…

Vocalist, Larissa, elaborates:

“The album’s lyrics capture and portray various forms of fighting an oppressive force. One of them struck Eliran’s eye as the most livid out of them all. In Perpetrator Emasculation a rapist is being force-fed his own genitalia. It’s not a secret that death metal art and lyrical content often involve violence against women and we liked the idea of turning the tables. That lyrical segment depicts the title and theme of the record very well and the visual execution makes your flesh crawl with vengeance.”

Venom Prison tackle subjects such as social Darwinism, misogyny, rape culture and the rejection of God and religion. The thinking person’s death metal band? Maybe so. The album, ‘Animus’, will be out on October 14 via Prosthetic Records, but to help get you in the mood, we have the exclusive premiere of ‘Celestial Patricide’ right here.
