Wehrmacht & Cryptic Slaughter Unite For Exclusive Obscene Extreme Set

By on 17 April 2014

Crossover legends Wehrmacht have joined forces with original Cryptic Slaughter drummer Scotty Peterson to perform an exclusive set at this year’s Obscene Extreme festival.

Alongside the likes of D.R.I. and Corrosion Of Conformity, Wehrmacht and Cryptic Slaughter were among the first bands to combine the speed of thrash metal with the rampant energy of punk, and have been cited as an influence by everyone from Napalm Death to Municipal Waste. Wehrmacht’s classic 1987 debut ‘Shark Attack’ is one of the most fondly remembered albums of that fertile crossover thrash era, and the ’88 follow-up ‘Biērmächt’ found the band reaching unprecedented levels of speed and aggression.

Meanwhile, Cryptic Slaughter’s 1986 debut ‘Convicted’ was one of the fastest records of the decade, offering up 14 extremely visceral and intense outbursts in just under half an hour, paving the way for the fledgling grindcore genre in the process. Lightning struck twice in this case, and the following year Cryptic Slaughter released ‘Money Talks’, an undisputed classic that found the band fusing their blisteringly fast hardcore assault with crushingly weighty grooves and catchier, more refined songs.

For this exclusive, one-off performance, Wehrmacht will be joined on stage by original Cryptic Slaughter drummer Scotty Peterson to play a whole host of classic tunes from each band’s back catalogue. If you have any interest in crossover thrash whatsoever, this promises to be an unmissable experience. We’ll see you there!

They’ll join previously announced acts like death metal forefathers Possessed, crust punk legendsDoom, death/doom supergroup Vallenfyre, death metal deities Master, grindcore bruisers Machetazo and fastcore freaks Vitamin X – and that’s just the lineup for the Czech edition of the festival!

Since 1999, the Czech Republic’s Obscene Extreme Festival has come to be revered as the promised land for grind freaks, boasting the best blast beat laden line ups year after year. In the interests of spreading grindcore across the globe, the festival’s organisers put on no less than four editions of the fest as part of an Obscene Extreme World Tour in 2013, and rather than rest on their laurels, they’re doing it all over again next year.

In addition to the Czech edition of the festival, Obscene Extreme will also be taking place in Japan, Australia and the USA in 2014, ensuring that grind-aholics the world over will be able to get their fix. Obscene Extreme is known for it’s stunning bills (featuring the best in grindcore, crust, punk, death, thrash, powerviolence and hardcore), DIY ethos, vegan friendly food stalls and communal atmosphere, so if you’re never made the grind pilgrimage (pilgrindage?) before, you have no excuse to miss out this time round!
