Mixtape: Erik Danielsson (Watain)

Watain

The latest in this series of hypothetical mixtapes comes from the bloodsoaked, blasphemous bowels of Watain’s Erik Danielsson. But it’s one that we want for real, having been teased with the idea of a mixtape featuring not only cult classics from Death SS and Bathory but also a demo of the forthcoming Watain album. Guess the imagination will have to hold us over until 2010. Where’s our battered copy of ‘Rabid Death’s Curse?’  Originally printed in Terrorizer 191, December 2009.

VOMITOR ‘Devil’s Poison’  FROM ‘DEVIL’S POISON’ (BLACKACE 2009)
“It’s not that often the hair on my arms stand up when I hear death metal recorded in this millennium. But this! Fucking hell…This is as foul and as real as metal once was, and a proof that it still can be. The bastard child of ‘Obsessed By Cruelty’ and ‘Kill Em All.’

BATHORY ‘Sacrifice’  FROM ‘SCANDINAVIAN METAL ATTACK’ (TYFON GRAMMAFON 1984)
“Impossible to make a mixtape without featuring Bathory, perhaps the most influential band ever to me. I think this version of ‘Sacrifice’ summons up everything Bathory were in the beginning, total black metal perfection from 1984.

DEATH SS ‘Chains Of Death’  FROM ‘EVIL METAL’ (ELECTRIC EYE 1983)
“Italy always makes me think of old tombstones, catacombs, black and violet candles burning low, exhumed corpses, incense, Bulldozer, Mortuary Drape, Black Hole and of course the mighty Death SS. This song, recorded in 1982, sums up all of those things perfectly. So much mystery and legend surrounds this amazing band, it’s strange more people haven’t heard of
them.”

THE DEVIL’S BLOOD ‘Voodoo Dust’  FROM ‘COME,REAP’ (VAN/PROFOUND LORE 2008)
“Rock ‘n’ Roll is the devils music, it always has been, but few are those who dare to admit it. This is one of the reasons why The Devil’s Blood have rocketed like an iron fist into the cunt of the music scene. Along with Atlantic Tide from Sweden these are one of the only bands of today that have the potential of becoming the next Rolling Stones.”

RAM ‘Lightbringer’  FROM ‘LIGHTBRINGER’ (AFM 2009)
“A modern heavy metal classic, with such an incredible depth in both atmosphere and artistry. RAM humiliate and crush all the new heavy metal bands around these days, they have the glowing force and the vision that all of the repetitioners lack.”

WATAIN ‘Reaping Death’  FROM ‘UNTITLED’ (DEMO 2010)
“Demo recording of a song from the upcoming album, to be released in June 2010. It is always something very special to listen to demo recordings recorded just after composing has been completed. It holds the spirit of the song that will continue to grow until it is time to record it for real. Musically I’d say it sounds like a mix of all the other songs on this mixtape, but better.”

NIFELHEIM ‘No More Life’  FROM ‘ENVOY OF LUCIFER’ (REGAIN 2009)
“The last song from the album ‘Envoy Of Lucifer’ is one of the greatest they ever did. It covers all aspects of this twisted band; the brutality, the originality, the skill and most of all that genuine darkness that so many bands are after but will never reach.”

DISSECTION ‘Reinkaos’  FROM ‘REINKAOS’ (BLACK HORIZON 2006)
“One of the darkest and most sinister moments in the history of music concludes this tape. This is to me the very zenith of Dissections musical legacy.”
