Canada’s eccentric tech-death kings Cryptopsy recently played a blistering homecoming show in Ontario, and Jason Deaville was there to catch this death metal tornado in full effect…

Cryptopsy: The December Massacre Tour

London, Ontario, Canada
Tuesday, December 10th, 2013

As one the most exalting and exacting extreme metal bands to have emerged out of Canada over the past twenty years, Montreal’s Cryptopsy have seen their fair share of criticism, particularly as it relates to their 2008 album, ‘The Unspoken King’. Personally, I didn’t understand all the hate thrown at them, as the album, albeit a different take on their brand of Northern extremity, is certainly as punishing as any of their earlier work.

The band, having the last laugh, certainly silenced any naysayers with their most recent self-titled slab of brutality, as was witnessed by those who attended their recent stop in London, Ontario, Canada, as part of their December Massacre tour. Delivering a quagmire of the most unadulterated and bulldozing setlists of the year, the band tore through many staples of their early, Lord-Worm-led catalog, with follicly-blessed vocalist Matt McGachy doing the worm eating Lord proud. Of course, we couldn’t rightly exit this review without paying heed to universal-chaos-in-human-form, drummer Flo Mounier, who is always an absolutely mind-boggling pleasure to observe in action.

If this night was any indication, Cryptopsy is the band to look out for moving into 2014. A solid, tight line-up, Cryptopsy is once again poised to reinvigorate a genre they had a huge part in creating.
