Live Review: Covenant

Nine months into their year long tour Swedish electronic act Covenant arrived in Birmingham. Their final UK date was in ex-working man's club 'Eddies' and, having last played the Midlands capital more than five years ago, the anticipation was palpable.
After support from Method Cell and Deadfilmstar, a very long intro began with lots of atmospheric music and build (perhaps a little too long). Covenant's set began with relatively low key tracks, including 'Bullet', but 'Judge Of My Domain' from the current album 'Modern Ruin' stepped up the pace while more and more people started to move. With the enthusiastic crowd, and surprisingly good attendance for a Tuesday, it was unfortunate that the sound was noticeably lacking in mid-range - most likely because the venue's equipment struggled with the headliner's sound.

New tracks followed, including 'Get On', as well as fan favourites from their last studio album like the uplifting and beautiful 'The Men'. Goth club classic 'We Stand Alone' provoked the whole venue to dance but oddly their other well known dance track 'Dead Stars' was ommitted completely.
Daniel Meyer, a recent addition to the Covenant line-up, took over lead vocals towards the end of the set and while the sombre 'Happy Man' was an odd choice for an encore their very final offering was their classic 'Stalker' leaving the crowd on an undoubted high.
