Hussey – Regan debut album ‘Curios’
CHERRY RED RECORDS
Release date; 7th November 2011
Wayne Hussey and Julianne Regan require no introduction as their respective musical careers speak volumes from an extensive discography spanning more than two decades. On a balmy summer’s evening in London, the year 1986 and the venue, the long-since demolished ‘Hammersmith Clarendon’, playing host to ‘Leather Nun’ whose feel-good hit of that year was the "way–ahead-of-its-time", ‘Fist Fuckers Associated’, a young Mr Hussey arrived early to catch a performance of the fledgling ‘All About Eve’. So enamoured by the soaring harmonies of their singer, Julianne Regan, he manoeuvred a meeting after the set, and asked her to sing on The Mission’s debut album. The rest is, as they say, history, already well known and readily available so we’ll leave the story there…..
And fast forward to 2009, where Wayne and Julianne started working together again with no other plan but to just mess around with a few ideas and see how it goes. As the first few song sketches began to gel, there was a realisation that an investment worthy of time, effort, heart and soul as well as bandwidth could become something much more than just ‘for fun’. With an ocean between them, Wayne now living in Brazil, and Julianne in London, other commitments and day jobs but with no musical restrictions, deadlines or outside interference, the songs and the album had all the time needed to develop and mature. Slowly taking shape from digital data pinging back and forth across the Atlantic, ideas became structures to be soldered together as coherent tracks, like growing lilies without gilding them.
The time difference meant that Julianne would often fall out of bed to an idea Wayne had been working on throughout the night while he would find, the following morning had brought new vocals from Julianne, or a semi-skeletal track ready to be further fleshed out. It took time, more than either had anticipated, but although both are capable of spontaneity and surprise, they are also perfectionists and wanted this album to be the album they both wanted to make.
Conceived, performed, produced, engineered and mastered entirely by just Wayne and Julianne without any other musicians, ‘Curios’ is richly marbled throughout from the long-standing personal and artistic chemistry between them. The album, featuring one new song, is a timeless collection of ‘interpretations’, rather than covers, of songs they have either already loved or come to love when the other had suggested them.
‘Curios’ is an album that may well confound expectation, maybe bewilder their previous audience but as with any new relationship, they both realise that ties with the past need to be severed if there is to be real hope of a future.
The debut album ‘Curios’ by Hussey-Regan is due to be released on November 7th 2011 on Cherry Red Records.
