SECTION (3)
'Justify The Cross'
SELF RELEASED
Formed in 2010, UK trio Section (3) have released their debut 4 track EP entitled ‘Justify The Cross’. An intriguing blend of refined guitar work, intricate layers of programming and sensitive basslines, wrapped around gritty vocals and underpinned with solid drum sequences that explore the more traditional goth sound of the band’s early influences.
Adrenalin fuelled ‘It’s Not Right’ with its punchy guitars and racing beats, developes into a raging soundscape of raw angst and helpless frustration so conveyed in Dave Roca’s vocals. In contrast, Chris Wareham’s more upbeat keyboard intro of ‘Confusion’ opens into a veil of sweeping atmospherics that envelope the melée of despairing vocals and haunting guitars.
Steve Williams’s heavy, driving guitar sounds of ‘Where Do I Go From Here’ explore a more punkier side to the band’s writing, whilst the playful keyboards and subtle atmospherics in ‘No Way Back’ gives a more contemporary feel to the song, the sadness of the lyrics pulling everything downward, a conflict between depression and surrounding happiness.
For a band still very much in it’s infancy, these are four interesting songs with clever arrangements that highlight an influenced diversity and an ability to pursue other more expressional avenues of creativity. However, at times the strong vocals cry out for a little echo to give a more haunting sound that would rise above the dominating guitars.
'Justify The Cross' is out now and available direct from the band.
