RELEASE THE BATS
'Nighty Night' EP
SELF RELEASED
They look like Sparks after a long night - kooky, ruffled and mustachieod - and sound like Elvis playing it straight in a haunted house - seriously. London four piece Release The Bats are B-movie rock and roll and this is their debut EP 'Nighty Night'. If these four, creepy, beat heavy tracks are representative of the (hopefully) forthcoming album, this band have much more than a 'promising start'.
Opener 'Make You My Baby' is rock 'n' roll at it's juddering, catchy, sleazy best, guaranteed to stick in your head like a bourbon hangover. 'Spooky Julie' warns of a devilish woman made from dreams and nightmares - 'you're a fool to stare, she got snakes in her hair' with howling vocals and a voodoo beat. The only love song, the melancholic 'To Find You', is far from being a token effort - it manages to be heartfelt and beautiful without breaking the tone of the album. 'Spinning In A Lover' closes the EP with desperate energy, trying to keep someone close, and final resignation at their probable loss forever.
Akin to Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, these guys are energetic, spooky and definitely rock and roll. The full length album cannot come soon enough.
