Jon TheGoth first entered the Goth scene back in 1997 after buying a copy of the very first 'Gothic Sounds Of Nightbreed' CD from a small record shop in Bristol called 'Replay'. The sounds of Faithful Dawn, Suspiria, and Midnight Configuration had him hooked. Luckily for Jon his parents are Goth fans and had introduced him to a good chunk of 80s Goth by the likes of The Mission and All About Eve. However, Jon soon discovered that his real love was for the newer Darkwave sound.
Jon started attending the local Goth club night in Cardiff called Necroscope, met a few people there, and fell in love with the scene. After Jon moved away from home he went to Swansea University but still travelled back to Cardiff to top up on his clubbing. Whilst at Necroscope he met a guy called Rob Mosley (known as Elvis) and they became great friends through a mutual love of Paradise Lost, and one day planned to start a band together. Sadly, on a day out with Gothic Mike Jon was told that Rob had been killed in a car accident, he was naturally very upset. By this time, Necroscope had closed it's doors, and Cardiff's Gothic hoards were forced to go to a small club called The Roxy. It was a Rock/Metal/Goth club, and Rob and Jon were regulars. The manager there asked Gothic Mike (who distributed their flyers and posters) to find a DJ to do a memorial set in Rob's honour, and through the death of a friend, this became the start of Jon's djing career.
Inquisition was started in 2001 by Jon and Mike after The Roxy closed down a few months later. Inquisition was held at the International Ice Rink's function suite called Gretzky's Bar and it ran for six years. Jon saw to it that he booked the bands that he'd been seeing in London at the time, such as Psychoplhile, The Sepia, Cauda Pavonis, The Narcissus Pool, The Scary Bitches and Synthetic, all of whom went down really well in Cardiff. Cardiff's Goth scene then expanded to huge proportions because of the new people to the scene, there were regular excursions with massive groups of people to events such as Carnival Of Souls, Gotham, Elektrofest, Black Celebration etc.
At this point in time Future-Pop was huge, the club was playing the full spectrum of goth and 'Combichrist were just a thought in Andy LaPlegua's mind'. Jon was accredited with introducing Future-Pop and EBM to Wales and that he was also 'saving the Welsh Goth scene'. Jon though, puts it down to the people that came to the club in the early years and were willing to try something new. Inquisition evenetually moved to another venue due to the ice rink being demolished, and continued to run until 2007 when they took an 18 month break.
Jon recently moved back to London, his original hometown, and started to get to know more influential people on the Goth scene here such as Frankie D, Mak and the Slimelight team, as well as Uncle Nemesis etc. He was getting more DJ work and getting better known, he'd originally been a CD-using DJ who had transferred to using a laptop. Jon says that he found it easier to get around the country armed only with a laptop as opposed to heavy cases of Cds - and he still played his beloved Future-Pop even when it went out of fashion.
Having started 'The Inquisitor's Hour' a show for Nightbreed Radio whereby he regulary gets to interview people like Frankie D and Cauda Pavonis, Jon reckons that a lot of doors opened to him on the scene in London, namely Slimelight . In 2010, Jon's career hit it's defining point when he decided to risk all and book a legendary band to appear there. Specimen were the choice, and Slimelight was the venue. Jon speaks very fondly of this event and found that working with Jon Klein and Olli Wisdom prior to the event enabled them to become good friends who, especially because of Olli's influence, got Jon into the realms of Psytrance and Goa Trance. Olli was the founder of 'Space Tribe', the home of Psychedelic Trance and clothing. It was largely through this friendship that Jon now loves experimenting with other forms of electronic music and began DJing Psytrance and Goa as opposed to simply being a Goth-playing DJ.
After the Specimen show Jon began working for Flag Promotions full-time, and is very happy to be 'at the head of the UK's biggest Goth scene music promotions company'. Jon's also a dab hand at designing posters and flyers too!
You can hear 'The Inquisitor's Hour' on Monday's at 10.00am - 11am and 9.30pm -10.30pm, and on Tuesday's at 4am - 5am.
