Black Sunday Up North.
Darkness descends on Newcastle this weekend as the newly opened Riverside plays host to three of the newest and most exciting bands in the region. This Sunday will see the last live appearence of 2010 from our friends in the North, NightPorter and they have pulled out all the plugs to ensure it goes off in style.
Joining them for their freakish frolics will be the wonderful Berlin Black from York, local Psychonauts, Lunajet and DJ Damien Stone will be taking care of business on the decks, spinning an eclectic mix of alternative tunes.
NightPorter have been on a roll of late, supporting the legendary Specimen, playing the opening night at Norwich's Belfry as well as a clutch of local dates that have firmly established then as one of the most exciting live acts on the scene. In between gigs, they have been working on new material that has already produced a hard hitting trilogy of songs and videos. "The Box". "The Black Lodge" and the disturbingly disturbing "The Demon Is A Liar", make up part of what NightPorter have dubbed, " The Maldine Square Tapes" ( We smell a Dr Phibes connection here, our resident Horror movie expert, Pete would probably agree). A collection of songs and instrumentals that blend horror samples and imagery as social commentary over a crescendo of noise destined for the dancefloor as well as the head. A reliable source has told me that this will also be the title of their 2011 debut album.
Their bizzare melting pot of dark Psychedelia , Post Punk fundamentals and alternative attitude makes for a unique sound that pays homage to the past but is firmly rooted in the present and they want to put on a night that reflects this in its wide selection of supporting stars.
Berlin Black boasts former Screaming Banshee Aircrew stalwart Chris Banshee and he promises a mind blowing mix of glitter and glam fusing Old Skool Glam with a modern Alternative Rock twist. I think that sells them a little bit short, Berlin Black are more than the sum of their influences, owing as much to John Foxx era Ultravox and the Cocteau Twins as to Iggy Pop and David Bowie. Their etheral emotion complements NightPorter's menace and aggression perfectly as the reflection behind the Chaos. They have already made their mark live and have left a big impresssion, Newcastle is going to be no different and anticipation of their appearance is already reaching fever pitch with those in the know.
LunaJet are the wild card of the night, their Myspoace sounds like says it all
"Pegasus is chatting up a couple o unicorns at the annual magic horse shindig! The robot cocktail waiter awaits patiently at their side stroking his tinsel beard and doffs his chrome flat cap when he catches their shining eyes."
Knowing NighPorter, I can see why they picked them. there Psychotropic blend of far out sounds have established them as a fetsival favourite so they are sure to entertain.
Throw in the Deejaying skills of Stripped's Damien Stone and you have the makings of one hell of a night and all for the princely sum of £4.00 at the door. With a line up to suit all alternative tastes, this promises to be a great night out, so be there or despair!
