LUXURY STRANGER + BERLIN BLACK
York, Stereo
Berlin Black are a treat and a half. Mostly speeding through an energetic, almost punk set they alight an eager crowd with energy and enthusiasm. Many people have trawled across the country to be here tonight and this is the kind of performance that doesn't disappoint. It's lively, it's fun - and the quieter, more balladic moments border on stunning... and this is only the support band!
BB are of course fronted by Chris Tuke - previously in the now disbanded Screaming Banshee Aircrew. He has a distinctive voice and strong stage presence - key attributes for any frontman.
The finale is a bombastic rendition of 'Burn it Down' - understandably met with great applause.
Luxury Stranger have an awfully strong performance to follow and their style is different. They're a lot more laid back in approach, more lounge-punk. Debut album 'Desolution' is now two years old and subsequently the bulk of their set is made up of new songs from the forthcoming album. Only time will tell how the new tracks stand up, but tonight they don't serve to be memorable - perhaps because there was so many of them.
There does seem to be an edge around some of the tracks, seeming to be slightly harder than normal in places. 'Dirt', from the debut album, has been given a reworking that seems a lot sharper live than on record.
It's most certainly enjoyable but overshadowed by such a strong performance from Berlin Black.
Overall, great performances from two decent bands. Both have a lot going for them and a new album each would really help them make an impact.
