The Thing Again

The Thing films have always enjoyed a convoluted transition. The original 1951 film, The Thing From Another World, was based upon John W. Campbell’s 1938 novel Who Goes There? The film was later remade in 1982 as John Carpenter’s classic The Thing. This current iteration of The Thing remains an awesome movie to this day, and was recently listed in Empire as one of “The Greatest Movies of All Time.

Given Hollywood’s predilection for being unable to leave classic movies alone (a rant for another time), a prequel to The Thing has been announced. Whilst this could be a recipe for disaster, the screenplay has been written by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica), and will revolve around the Norwegian crew who first discovered the alien.
Ronald D. Moore has stipulated that this new iteration is not intended as a remake, but as a companion piece to John Carpenter’s The Thing. Given the aforementioned Norwegian crew is an established part of the original film’s plot, this new film could actually work very well.

The Thing prequel will star Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, and Dennis Storhoi. A release date has been scheduled in April 2011.
