Ahead of their appearance at Maryland Deathfest, The Obsessed played the rather intimate setting of LA’s Redwood Bar And Grill and Terrorizer’s Joshua Sindell was on hand to witness it…

There’s no denying the impact of Josh Homme and Scott ‘Wino’ Weinrich on stoner rock and the doom underground. They were tourmates once, back two decades ago, when The Obsessed and Kyuss drove from club to club together along the US West Coast. Tonight, however, the two singer-songwriter-guitarists’ career paths are thrown into stark relief. At the Wiltern Theatre, arguably L.A.’s most prestigious live concert setting, Homme’s Queens Of The Stone Age are performing songs from their highly-anticipated new album to a sold-out audience, with nearly 2,000 people in attendance. Meanwhile, Wino and a re-formed The Obsessed are playing a cramped pub on a near-deserted downtown street.

Not that this deters nearly a hundred passionate doomsters. Many have turned up early to see former Monster Magnet guitarist Ed Mundell and his new outfit, The Ultra Electric Mega Galactic, re-write the ’60s power-trio rulebook. Without lyrics or vocals, the band rely on skill alone, and they do a fine job of allowing onlookers to experience Jimi Hendrix-style jamming without having to go to the trouble of building a time machine.

By the time Wino leads drummer Greg Rogers and bassist Reid Raley (also of Rwake) into The Obsessed’s first thunderous notes, standing room around the Redwood’s tiny stage is impossible, and necks crane and tiptoes are stood upon to catch a glimpse of the frontman’s stern visage. Though the group plays songs from 1991’s ‘Lunar Womb’ and ’94’s ‘The Church Within’, the aged tunes retain their stentorian power. The biggest difference between Wino’s stints with Saint Vitus and those with The Obsessed is that Wino plays guitar with this band, and tonight his searing leads add a ferocious edge. Between songs, Wino mentions that tomorrow the band flies out to appear at the multi-band Maryland Deathfest, but adds that intimate shows like this one are “pretty darn cool.” And he’s not wrong.

Taiwanese metallers Chthonic are premiering their brand new video for ‘Sail Into The Sunset’s Fire’ exclusively with Terrorizer.

‘Sail Into The Sunset’s Fire’ is the second single to be taken from Chthonic’s forthcoming seventh album ‘Bù-Tik’, which is due for release 3 June via Spinefarm.

The video was once again directed by Lin Chun and this time, the entire video was filmed in an outdoor swimming pool and, as fate would have it, the sunny day soon turned to a raging storm, creating the level of intensity both director and band were looking for…

“When a person encounters difficulties, he might feel as though he is going through a storm, so I chose to shoot with water,” explains Lin Chun. “No-one was prepared for the storm, but it brought a fabulous effect to the video!”

With bassist Doris Yeh adding: “It seemed such a coincidence when it started to pour. The cameraman was completely soaked and shivering, so I was thinking: ‘Okay! Let’s get this done quickly so he can get out of the water!’”

According to vocalist Freddy Lim, ‘Sail Into The Sunset’s Fire’ recounts the story of pirates in East Asia in the Age Of Exploration: “We’re not encouraging kidnapping or robbery, but the challenge to conventional authority here is indeed inspiring. According to historical accounts, the pirates—who came from islands between Japan & Indonesia—had planned to overthrow the Ming Empire of China and the Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan, and some of them eventually settled along Taiwan’s western coast…”

Chthonic are also confirmed to play on the Pepsi Max Stage at this years Download festival, on Saturday 15 June. The band last appeared on the hallowed grounds of Donington in 2011, but this time around they are returning with an oriental orchestra. Says Doris: “This is the first time we’ll have played with the orchestra outside of Taiwan. We’re really hoping to present a show that people will be talking about for some time to come…”

With San Francisco’s Sabbath worshipping children of love Orchid in town, Terrorizer’s Angela Davey was at The Underworld in London…

Without the overpowering scent of sweaty bodies the smell of Camden’s Underworld takes on a life of its own, however, despite the venue not being as packed as it could be, the final European tour date of San Francisco’s children of love, Orchid, ensures they go out with a mighty bang.

Fresh from tearing things up at Desert Fest, London’s Crystal Head are back to kick things off with a hybrid of ‘60’s grooves and chunky stoner riffs. Their modern approach to traditional British rock is both uplifting and heavy.

Another regular on the London gig scene are local lads Serpent Venom; fast becoming the linchpin of every respectable doom line up, their occult vibes and devastatingly powerful vocals are accompanied by thunderous guitar and bass lines, alongside deliberate and measured crashing percussion. Churning out new, unreleased, material alongside ‘Carnal Altar’ favourites such as ‘Devilshire’, the four piece provide the perfect appetiser to the impending madness.

Regaling the crowd with tales of how San Francisco isn’t so different to London and just how bad their tour bus smells (to be honest, anyone currently stood in the Underworld with a sense of smell probably has a pretty good idea), Orchid match musical dexterity with charismatic stage presence. Taking their audience on a journey through space and time, the Sabbathian riffs of ‘Silent One’ are a throwback to the 1970’s, whilst the tremulous and edgy atmosphere of ‘Eyes Behind The Wall’ floats to the moon and back in a flower painted rocket. Their retro blend of hard rock, blues and folk is genuinely captivating and they prove that with a sound this huge they are no mere flash in the pan, but a cosmic star that will continue to burn bright and light the way for traditional doom the world over.

“Waking up on day one of any festival is always hard depending on what happened the night before, but Carcass always sort your head out. What better way to start any festival experience than with a song about lost aspirations and losing all hope…?”

SLAYER – ‘Angel Of Death’ FROM ‘REIGN IN BLOOD’ (DEF JAM 1986)

“Just because….its fucking Slayer….. you don’t need a reason!! Except that its FUCKING SLAAAYEEERRRRRRR!!!”

MACHINE HEAD – ‘Davidian’ FROM ‘BURN MY EYES’ (ROADRUNNER 1994)

“‘LET FREEDOM RING WITH THE SHOTGUN BLAAAAAAAST!!!’. Nuff Said.”

OVERKILL – ‘Elimination’ FROM ‘THE YEARS OF DECAY’ (ATLANTIC/MEGAFORCE 1989)

“Cue insanity in any circle pit, and instant drinking games in any campsite. Beer Bong works especially well with this track!”

SEPULTURA – ‘Refuse/Resist’ FROM ‘CHAOS A.D.’ (ROADRUNNER 1993)

“Just the sheer tribal feel of this powerhouse of a track is sure to get the blood of any discerning metallian pumping. If it doesn’t…. you’re obviously dead inside.”

PANTERA – ‘Domination’ FROM ‘COWBOYS FROM HELL’ (ATCO 1990)

“I can’t ever remember having as much fun than when drinking coldies with Mike Alexander somewhere at a festival in Germany whilst this was playing out the PA. I had 4 bottles in each hand, and was drinking like it was my last day on earth. These are now the standard rules when this song comes on. Fact.”

DEICIDE – ‘Once Upon The Cross’ FROM ‘ONCE UPON THE CROSS’ (ROADRUNNER 1995)

“Metal Claw – Check. Epic Beard – Check. Ridiculously evil voices…. Check. Drum fuelled, satanistic destruction…..CHECK. Ok - go fuckin’ crazy!!!”

JUDAS PRIEST – ‘Painkiller’ FROM ‘PAINKILLER’ (COLUMBIA 1990)

“Guaranteed to get thousands of metal-hungry festival goers all air-drumming in unison, and likewise singing along to Mr. Halford’s ridiculously ear-shattering vocals. What better way to bring people together??”

STEEL PANTHER – ‘Death To All But Metal’ FROM ‘FEEL THE STEEL’ (UNIVERSAL 2009)

“Jokes aside, and with tongue firmly in-cheek, this song sums up what the metal festival experience is all about – you’re there for one reason and one reason only. Ripped spandex and tassles optional…”

DIO – ‘Stand Up And Shout’ FROM ‘HOLY DIVER’ (VERTIGO 1983)

“No metal festival would be complete without homage to one of the genre’s most entertaining and tenacious performers to ever walk a stage. Paying tribute to the King should be part of any festival-goer’s itinerary.”

Speaking to Terrorizer about the album, Downpresser vocalist Dan Weinraub said: “‘Don’t Need A Reason’ has been a long time coming. The process of writing, re-writing, recording, and re-recording the songs on this album spanned three years, more than three lineup changes, and the greater part of the state of California. We focused our energies in an attempt to push Downpresser to the next level musically and lyrically while taking care not to deviate drastically from the sound we’ve been building for the past seven years. It goes without saying that it hasn’t always been easy, but it has always been rewarding, and I can no longer picture my life without Downpresser in it. We are thoroughly proud of ‘Don’t Need A Reason’, and we hope that it ends up meaning to someone even half as much as it means to us. Thank you.”

Terrorizer Presents The Devil’s Music… the definitive story of the influence of the dark side on music.

You can get a copy of this special collector’s edition magazine now or get it as a digital copy right here.

Musicians making pacts with The Devil – it’s happened throughout time. We flip through the history books to investigate just how much the horned one has enjoyed dabbling in the creative arts. From doom’s devilish darkside, via NWOBHM’s dark dealings, to the latest wave of bands swearing themselves to the dark – The Devil’s Music is the ultimate look at the culture of dark, satanic and ritualistic music.

Inside you’ll find the definitive story of the Devil’s Music, as well as brand new and exclusive interviews with Coven, King Diamond, Hell, Jaz Coleman, Satan and more. Plus, Winterfylleth’s Simon Lucas explores the (un)healthy relationship between heavy metal and horror movies and Cradle Of Filth’s Dani Filth recounts tales of the second generation of black metal.

Editor Darren Sadler says: “Growing up in an age when life was black and white (it wasn’t really, but a laptop and the Internet were nothing but the unrealised dreams of nerdy young geeks), I remember the younger me gazing at the mysterious covers of albums such as Bathory’s ‘Under The Sign Of The Black Mark’ with awe, wonderment and a sense of worry, too.

While the music blasted out of the midi-system, my buddy Martin and I sat intrigued, wondering who and what was making this unholy racket that we’d just purchased at our local record store. Was Quorthon really the Devil incarnate? Would listening to Venom mean the Devil would land in the room and take us to Hell? And was King Diamond really a Satanist out to recruit us to the Dark Side? We were never too sure.

Even listening to Maiden’s ‘Number Of The Beast’ earned us a sure fire one-way ticket to Hell in my mother’s eyes.I could blame Rainbow Records and Durant Records of Shrewsbury (both now sadly deceased – R. I. P.) for providing me with the ammunition that helped my musical journey down the Left Hand Path, or maybe the Devil subconsciously enticed me to check out his tunes. Who knows? And while those youthful days didn’t last forever, those bands, those tunes and many more like them, have had a profound effect on not just my life, but millions more around the globe – and continue to do so even today.
