FEAR FACTORY, DAYSEND - MANNING BAR, SYDNEY

Local metal horde Daysend, with their In Flames, Machinhead hybrid sound do a reasonable job as support act, but you’d think with a third album on the horizon they’d have a tad more stage presence, and the lead guitar was way too loud as all the songs seemed to based around twiddly solos, If the mix had been a little fairer to the rest of the band, Daysend’s impact may well have been greater.Read more

THE AMENTA, SUBTRACT, DAEMON FOETAL HARVEST - THE BALD FACED STAG, SYDNEY

Daemon Foetal Harvest storm through their set of tight, taught and bludgeoning brutal death. They attack with sharp, surgical precision and when a squeaky voice at the front asks, “Can we have something a little less brutal please?” he is completely ignored, getting instead a sonic hammer to the face.
Hailing from New Zealand, Subtract have a different approach to extreme metal. Their's is one that isn’t quite as fast or as painfully brutal. Subtract like their metal with more of a groove, a swagger, a rolling pick up truck full of all sorts of nasty.

THE DWARVES, BLOOD DUSTER - THE GAELIC, SYDNEY

Blood Duster really do like to take the piss out of themselves, the audience and any band they may have come into contact with, including tonight’s headliners, “We’d have enough space on this stage if The Dwarves hadn’t filled it up with their crap. Don’t step here, don’t cross this line,” complains bass player Jason PC, “and you want to know who else are wankers? Slayer, all of them and Glen Danzig. But there’s no surprise there.” And he completely dismisses the calls for the band to get naked, “Are you serious? Before The Dwarves come on?

NAZXUL, THE VEIL, EREBUS ENTHRONED - MANNING BAR, SYDNEY

Dotted around the stage are a collection of animal skulls adorned with various satanic and magical symbols, all belonging to Erebus Enthroned, a young, corpse painted gang who like the nefarious pounding of primitive black metal. They do a pretty good job of it but lack a certain atmosphere, a little unsure of their stage presence, but they give it a good crack and the dead thing hanging from vocalist Nihilifer is worryingly unrecognisable as something that was once a living thing.
Sydney goth metallers The Veil are a weird one.

PISSCHRIST, DEATHCAGE, TAIPAN, PATHETIC HUMAN - BALDFACED STAG, SYDNEY.

Melbourne’s Pathetic Human look way too young to be playing their frantic Heresy-meets-Stretcheads hardcore. No-one their age should really know about these bands, but somehow they do and give an outstanding performance of mid ‘80s spastic hardcore with all the youthful energy it deserves.
Taipan are the embodiment of chaos punk. Already banned from at least one Sydney venue they seem to be having a good go at getting barred from here too. With the singer spending most of the time in the crowd bating the audience something was going to happen sooner or later.
