(LIVE REVIEW) KYUSS LIVES!, MANCHESTER

Most people have never had the chance to see these titanic groovers before, and so it was no surprise to see Manchester Academy become a hive of overexcited stoner worshippers.
Before they came on it was down to Burden to warm up the crowd. The band certainly put in effort but it was inescapable that they were nothing more than mediocre.
Making a 25 minute set drag is in itself a talent and their groove by numbers didn’t leave any lasting impression.
Followers Bloodcargo were on a whole different level of drab. Clearly influenced by Down, the band proceeded to do a terrible impression of Phil Anslemo and co. without any of the bite.
The small amounts of modern metal injected made things worse and it was bewildering as to how they’ve escaped the pub circuit.
One band that are bound to please are Kyuss Lives!. John Garcia coming onstage dressed like someone from Men in Black highlighted his suave onstage persona and kicked things off brilliantly.
The set list was almost immaculate and songs such as ‘One Inch Man’ had an extra crushing dimension live. Kyuss Lives! were clearly all about the music and the lack of between song banter added to the intimate atmosphere they created.
Each member played a crucial part in the set and bassist Nick Oliveri in particular seemed to be enjoying his revisited role. These stoner legends looked as if they’d never been away and when songs like ‘Thumb’ announced themselves pure pandemonium kicked in.
Closing with a stomping rendition of ‘Green Machine,’ Kyuss Lives! begged the question Josh who?
