LATITUDES @ The Old Blue Last, Shoreditch

CTHULHU YOUTH open the show; they aren't playing with their regular drummer and are performing material written just the day before, but their atmospheric soundscape is spot on and they get off to an impressive start, but unfortunately, fizzle out towards the end.
Up next are BAST, London based sludge trio with infusions of black metal. They play with a confidence that is infectious and despite their drummer dropping a stick (but managing to finish an entire song one handed) they are still able to pull off a near perfect and seemingly effortless performance.
The Old Blue Last is getting fuller and the atmosphere is starting to resemble that of a rainforest in heat and humidity, but this does not dampen the brutal onslaught delivered by HAMMERS. Their drummer's technique is nothing if not unique and is a definite crowd pleaser. This band is tight and clearly on top form. They pull off an interchange of speed and slowness but are undoubtedly heavy throughout.
Finally, the show's headliners, LATITUDES, take the stage. After experiencing technical difficulties at their last two London shows they finally have the upperhand and take full control of the crowd. They are flawless; demonstrating their ability to play beautifully and intricately whilst remaining loud and unbelievably brutal. They play a couple of old favourites, such as 'Myth Cathexis' and 'Agonist', but the crowd are being treated to mostly new material tonight and it cannot be argued that the new album is awaited with eager anticipation. Absolutely fantastic.
