BAST get the show off to a superb start, offering up a cacophony of heavy instrumentals and chilling vocals. Despite a small technical difficulty to start off with, their last song, ‘Spectres’ has the entire crowd moving and nodding their heads and the end of their performance is met by cheers and rapturous applause. A real treat for those who turn up early enough to see this.
There are rumours floating around that second act, BONG, will be incorporating a sitar into their performance, which has everyone excited. They take the stage and sadly, everyone is disappointed; not just by the distinct lack of a sitar, but also by their abismal performance. Their set is 45 minutes long and consists of just one song; it is easy to see what they are trying to achieve, a soundscape resonance akin to Sunn O))), but they miss it by miles, lacking the charisma and stage presence to pull it off. There are three distinguishable notes on the guitars, backed by white noise and the occasional drone from the vocalist. Boring.
Finally, Italian giants, UFOMAMMUT, appear – they have a projector screen behind them displaying hypnotic moving images, provided by Malleus Rock Lab. They open with ‘Stigma’ and the excitement in the air is so thick you can almost reach out and touch it; if you’re able to move your arms, that is. They play flawlessly, atmospheric as ever and by the time ‘Eve’ kicks in the crowd is unable to keep still, despite the lack of space. All are entranced by the gloomy sounds and vintage electronics. They round the show off with ‘God’ having played a set that is an hour and 15 minutes long they are still met by screams of ‘More!’ at the end. Their perfomance is beautiful, faultless and moving.
The Fighting Cocks empties out as people head home, but one thing is for certain; what people have experienced tonight will not be forgotten.
