Daniel Lioneye is the side project of Mikko "Linde" Lindström (guitars, vocals and bass) and Janne "Burton" Puurtinen (keyboards) of HIM and Black Vomit Bolton (drums) of Enochian Crescent. Even if you have never heard of Daniel Lioneye, you have most likely heard the song “The King of Rock’N’Roll”, which was used as the theme song to MTV2’s Viva la Bam.
Daniel Lioneye’s Vol. II is the bands sophomore album, and they have taken a drastically different direction than HIM’s ‘love metal’ approach. There is about as much ‘love’ in this bands metal as there is my post-Christmas stool. While the band’s earlier release was more straightforward rock, Vol. II incorporates other genres, such as power metal and black metal. When I picked up Vol. II at the local record store, I didn’t know what to expect. Now on the fifth listen, I can honestly say this album blew me away. Though it is very difficult to describe the sound of Vol. II, the best way is removing Ville Valo and Gas Lipstick from HIM (vocals and drums; respectively) and replacing them with Gaahl (Ex-Gorgoroth; Ex-Godseed) on vocals and Frost (Satyricon; 1349) on drums, and having the whole band do acid. Between the artwork and lyrics, the thoughts of acid arise again. Take, for instance, the first lines from “Kiss of the Cannibal”:
“In the magic Toys ’R’ Us
Dancing dhurga is lurking -mmm hot chocolate-
I’m playing cosmic pulsing game
With a teddy bear”
(Don’t worry, I don’t get it either.)
The result is a truly unique, almost psychedelic black metal experience which will leave you craving more. Highlights of the album include “Euroshaman”, Neolithic Way” and “I Have Never Wanted to Be Number One”.
