JOSÉ'S BAND OF THE WEEK: ANION
By José on Aug 25, 2010 | In Features, News, Features
Get 'em while they're young, I say. Start liking bands when they only have a couple of demos out so that you can bitch a couple of years later that they used to be awesome when nobody knew them but you.
Nah, just kidding, that's retarded. Besides, in these days of four thousand "if you like those bands on your page, check out our stuff too"-like friend requests on MySpace, it's getting harder and harder to get to the few bands that have only a couple of demos out that are actually really worth our time. Therefore, I must thank the gods of heavy metal for pointing me to Anion.
These guys are from Vancouver and they have a grand total of zero releases on the usual CD format right now, which is somehow appropriate. Their noisy, angry, sludgy, pound-yer-face-in brand of aggression (just so you know, if you haven't paid attention in physics or chemistry class, an anion is an ion with a negative charge, and so is this music) is best heard on the hissy 1980 sound of a cassette tape - 'Corpse Flower', their first release, red cassette beautifully packaged inside a little cloth bag - or on the warm and sweaty sound of vinyl - 'Carrion King', their 7" that has just come out, decorated with a gorgeously hideous zombie bird thing.
So go get them. Besides looking lovely on your shelf, they'll also give you a combined total of eight songs (okay, seven, since 'Corpse Flower', the song, is repeated on both) of a no-frills, riff-based punky mix of the best metal and hardcore have to offer. If you like stuff like, say, -(16)- or Struck By Lightning, you'll be instantly hooked as vocalist Johnny Matter screams his head off all over the catchy, dirty swing of the motherlode-riff of 'We Made Our Graves', for example. "I'll burn your house down," he shouts during 'Scum Lord', and he will, figuratively speaking, if you listen to it at the appropriate volume (ie, MAX, did you still have doubts?).
Plus, I have a sneaking suspicion that it'll still be wicked cool to like Anion even when they don't just have a cassette and a 7" out.

I know I'll regret this, but if you're in a band with just a couple of demos and you think they're the shit just like Anion is, I'd love to hear them. Send them to jose.bandoftheweek@gmail.com and I might be in a mood good enough to actually listen.
