JOSÉ'S BAND OF THE WEEK: LORDS OF BUKKAKE

Pornogrind, right? Or, at the very least, brutal death metal with ladies hacked to bits and covered in, erm, blood on the censored version of the artwork. Well, wrong. Lords Of Bukkake are a sludge/doom band, and even if the name might seem misleading at first, once you subject yourself to the torrent of filth they unleash, it'll feel right. By then, it'll be their origin that'll seem most bizarre - who would have thought that one of the most important carriers of the Iron Monkey legacy would reside in Barcelona? Long seen as mostly barren wastes in the overall map of extreme music, both Portugal and Spain have been throwing up a hell of a scene in the past few years, especially when it comes to the whole doom, sludge or stoner stuff. Spain alone has given us Adrift, Moho, Orthodox, Viaje A 800, Monkeypriest or Aathma, to name but a few of the uglier ones, strictly musically speaking of course. Pick of the bunch so far, however, and ugliest by far too, are these strange named fellows.
Past (and present) endeavours of the trio include a noise band, Sons Of Bronson, and instrumental psych-prog outfit Cuzo, both great indications of what can be expected of Lords Of Bukkake's mindbending mix of unpleasantries. Top of the influence list seems indeed to be Iron Monkey, but there are other hellish demons at play here. It was evident on their 2008 self-titled debut, but even more on the just released (on Total Rust) follow-up 'Desorden Y Rencor' that the guys like to descend into apparent random chaos during songs, a bit like Burning Witch or even Gnaw, and the whole ordeal is spattered by strange noises and spacey atmospheres, inducing a strong sense of otherwordliness down on the gutter where the music mostly resides.
The four long songs that seem to be the norm for their albums make up for roughly 53 and 40 minutes respectively on each (the debut hits you with the almost twenty minute long disease that is 'Black Lung'), but they never feel that long. In Lords Of Bukkake slow motion land, a riff takes longer to play, after all, and there's enough variation and bursts of ungodly noise to keep the attention levels high throughout, all while bassist/vocalist Toni Querol's screech peels your wallpaper off with that Steve Austin-like swarm of bees quality that sounds for all the world like the man will cough his lungs out at any second.
I seem to end quite a few of my recommendations like this, but what the hell - if you have any interest in pissed off, confrontational, alleyway knife fight music, you need these two albums. Get the split with Warchetype and Sons Of Bronson while you're at it too, if you can still find it. There's only one Bukkake song in there, but it's nineteen minutes long. So there.
