MAIDEN-LOVING MP LAUNCHES INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION

MP Mike Weatherley - who drew attention a few months back for wearing an Iron Maiden t-shirt in Parliament - is launching 'Rock The House', a national music competition in search of talented new artists and venues from across the UK.
'Rock The House' will look to raise political awareness of issues around music copyright and the importance of protecting the intellectual property of artists' work.
Supported by names within music including key sponsors UK Music and Future Publishing, the competition has already attracted significant interest.
Mike Weatherley worked in the music industry for as number of years himself prior to beginning his political career, and is just a bit excited about his new project.
"Issues around copyright and protecting the intellectual property of artists are not part of traditional parliamentary business," he explains, "and my hope in developing 'Rock The House' is to put the spotlight on some very important issues within the music industry and increase political support for protecting artists’ work.
"There seems to be a growing public perception that creative work should be 'free' ,but I believe that protecting an artist’s intellectual property is vital for the future of the UK music industry.
"Protecting artists is about recognising the significant contribution that music sales make to the British economy, and helping to ensure the continued development of new talent."
'Rock The House' offers entry categories covering both Live Bands and Live Music Venues - and is open for entries now.
Bands and venues are invited to enter themselves, via their local MP, who will make nominations to a judging panel of music industry heavyweights, on behalf of their own constituencies. Entries can be submitted until the closing date of 31 March 2011. Further details and the official application form are available online at: www.rockthehouse.me.uk and winners will be announced by the end of May.
All competition finalists will be invited to attend an exclusive star-studded event on the Terrace of the House of Commons on 30 June. Other top prizes up for grabs for winners include: Yamaha music gear and instruments, master classes with top industry consultants, high profile media coverage, and much more.
