Mixtape: Nadja
Nadja’s Aidan Baker and Leah Buckareff take us on a trip through their favourite bands, without an A-ha song in sight. Originally appeared in Terrorizer 186, August 2009.
SIDE AIDAN
GODFLESH ‘Ice Nerveshatter’ FROM ‘GODFLESH’ (SWORDFISH 1988)
“Of course Godflesh has been a big influence on our sound, no denying that, and while Godflesh’s first album isn’t one of my favourites, ‘Ice Nerveshatter’ is one of my favourite Godflesh tracks. There are other Godflesh tunes with a groove, but this is one of their heaviest-but-catchiest.”
THROBBING GRISTLE ‘Six Six Sixties’ FROM ’20 JAZZ FUNK GREATS’ (INDUSTRIAL 1979)
“’20 Jazz Funk Greats’ is my favourite TG album, one I consider their most consistent. There are several good tunes on it, but ‘Six Six Sixties’ stand outs – I just wish it was longer with its sludgy bass groove and simple electronic beat.”
SONIC YOUTH ‘She’s In A Bad Mood’ FROM ‘CONFUSION IS SEX’ (NEUTRAL 1983)
“This is an old song and one of SY’s heaviest and darkest. ‘Confusion Is Sex’ sounds pretty different from all of their other releases, especially their self-titled debut, which immediately preceded it. I’ve read that they were listening to a lot of hardcore at the time and it definitely shows in the aggression and harshness that permeates this album.”
BREACH ‘Penetration’ FROM ‘VENOM’ (BURNING HEART 1999)
“I wish this Swedish group still existed and would make another record. The almost-jazzy chords which intro this song are so nicely juxtaposed with the heavy parts and the rawness of the singers vocal delivery.”
BIG BLACK ‘Kitty Empire’ FROM ‘SONGS ABOUT FUCKING’ (TOUCH AND GO 1987)
“The longest and slowest tune on ‘Songs About Fucking’… with a nice chuggy groove.”
THE ANGELS OF LIGHT ‘New York Girls’ FROM ‘HOW I LOVED YOU’ (YOUNG GODS 2001)
“We can’t deny a Swans influence anymore than we can Godflesh, but Gira’s current project Angels Of Light can be just as heavy and dark as Swans, even if it’s acoustic and ‘folky’. ‘New York Girls’ has such a great, brooding atmosphere, and when the song gets into that lock groove, I wish it would just go on forever too…”
SIDE LEAH
INDIAN JEWELRY ‘Lesser Snake’ FROM ‘INVASIVE EXOTICS’ (MONITOR 2006)
“Austin’s Indian Jewelry remind me of Throbbing Gristle, though maybe a little organic and not quite as electronic. These guys put on a great, hypnotic show with their swirling psychedelic sounds.”
GREY DATURAS ‘Demarcation Disputes/Unity’ FROM ‘RETURN TO DISRUPTION’ (NEUROT 2008)
“We played with these guys recently and I really enjoyed the heavy drones they produced… and the vaguely jazzy, vaguely groovy rhythms complimented those drones nicely.”
CIRCLE ‘Lokki’ FROM ‘SUNRISE’ (EKTRO 2002)
“We saw Circle live at SXSW a couple years ago. They played a great set, but I only recently picked up one of their albums, ‘Sunrise’. And ‘Lokki’, all fifteen-plus minutes of it, with its krautrock groove is an amazing tune to get lost in.”
THE BORDOMS ‘Super Are’ FROM ‘SUPER ARE’ (BIRDMAN 1998)
“The Boredoms are all over the place stylistically, and this tune is no different – but it’s got some really nice heavy guitar in it. Another band that puts on a great live show, probably best appreciated in a live setting.”
