Terrorzone: Nasum And Brutal Truth

NASUM + BRUTAL TRUTH

THE ANNEX WRECK ROOM, TORONTO

Luckily for Brutal Truth, the focus isn’t so much on them as it is on what Nasum have billed as their final tour ever. We remain sceptical – who knows what the future will bring? Wasn’t ‘Grind Finale’ supposed to be the grind/grand finale? What about the ‘Doombringer’ live album? Anyway, back to the absolutely horrendous sounding Brutal Truth. Erik Burke’s guitar sounds like a swarm of farting hornets set on fire, Dan Lilker’s bass isn’t much better (but it is twice as loud), and we see Rich Hoak hitting his drums, but we don’t hear Rich Hoak hitting his drums. Perceptions are always variable though, as post-gig, Hoak described the on-stage sound as “amazing.”

The overall sound quality made a drastic improvement when Nasum hit the stage with ‘Mass Hypnosis,’ ‘This Is…’ and ‘The Masked Face.’ Never mind that you can find countless online videos of the band’s final whirl (and realise the set hasn’t changed since that first show in Örebro): watching the band, fronted by the perfect man for the job, Rotten Sound’s Keijo Niinimaa, crank out ‘the hits’, dredges up heart wrenching exult. The band are obviously having shit loads of fun, especially always-entertaining guitarist Jon Lindqvist (Victims), but a sombre air surrounds these songs which have been frozen in time with Mieszko’s death. Sentiment and mood aside, Nasum fucking kill it, top-to-bottom, for a full hour, and that’s all that matters.
