Despite the band’s dark and sinister moniker, the Florentine trio Dystopian Society are a rather melodic and positive sounding bunch. Their strong batcave cum deathrock style is evocative of the early movements, but their execution is quite contemporary, making them a compelling listen.

Energetic and aggressive in their attack, the band still manages to balance the rough punk sound with catchy guitar riffs and melodic vocals. Songs like ‘No Hope’, ‘The Legacy Of Wars’, ‘Death Signals’ and ‘Heretic’ in particular become alluringly sing-a-long at times bringing to mind acts like UK Decay and Christian Death. Though the band never really stray to far out of their comfort zones they mix things up just enough to keep the album fresh and interesting throughout.
As you’d expect the production is quite lo-fi, but it isn’t impenetrable. Lots of reverb and having the bass high in the mix is enough to give it that desirable old school sound without it sounding like a third-generation tape.

This is a strong first step for the band that will definitely appeal to more old school fans. However there are a few hints that the band could be a little more innovative and left-field in their approach, which considering the current genre could only be an advantage for them if they choose to explore it more.
