Review: Tongue – At the Beginning…

AF-MUSIC/Zorch Factory Records

Opening up a short release with the entire “I’m mad as hell” speach from the movie Network might be a little excessive, but the tone of defiance it sets is backed up by six high energy tracks that match the sentiment. Tongue, being from the Czech Republic, may not have seen the clip as many times as some of us in the States. Not a day goes by without one of my yank friends posting the clip. We’re mad as hell over here, but we’re taking it…

Rusty, heavily chorused guitars, driving bass, drums propelling insistently forward and vocals from the crypt are what a good deathrock release calls for. Well, Tongue has all the boxes checked on At the Begining, their debut EP. Deathrock bands from the Czech Republic are rare and so are deathrock duos. While they meet the genre where it stands, they certainly grab it by the throat.

The production has a home-brewed feel to it, a more DIY production with the pointy bits still in, but  it would have benefited from more drums and especially vocals in the mix. Arrangements are lean and focused, and would benefit by being driven more by the rhythm section and vocals. Especially the vocals in this case, for the choruses are the most glorious aspect of the tracks on At the Beginning. This is a band that has a real gift for writing a chorus that will get under your skin and not leave you be for days. This is a real asset that should be highlighted. It will be interesting to see how Tongue evolves, for this is a resounding opening shot.
